The Ritz Theatre Benefit and John Campbell Tribute Show - 12 Hours of Music!

October 11th, from 1pm until 1am, Dr. Rockits will host 12 Hours of Music to benefit The Ritz Theatre Revival, headed up by Corpus Christi PATCH, Inc. (a 501 (c)(3) organization). An eclectic group of bands, from local legends to hot young stars and some out of town guests, will share the stage to raise money to restore the historic Ritz Theatre, where many famous musicians got their start.

Don’t miss it!
Tours will be going on all day and night at The Ritz! See what the theatre is all about!

The Bones and Blues Club joins PATCH in paying tribute to Ritz Theatre history. The event will honor the late John Campbell, a famous blues man from the 70’s to early 90’s, who’s career took off after opening for Willie Nelson at The Ritz in 1975. He signed with Elektra Records and toured with Buddy Guy before his untimely death in 1993. Campbell might not be the most famous person to perform at The Ritz, but the fact that his fan base in Texas still want to honor him after he died 15 years ago reflects what Texas music is all about. John Campbell has a lasting reputation of being an extraordinary blues musician on his steel slide guitar, and his followers are still in admiration of his talent. The Bones and Blues Club has been holding benefit shows in John Campbell’s name for many years.

All of the proceeds from sponsorship, ticket sales, and a silent auction will go to PATCH directly for the restoration of The Ritz Theatre in Downtown Corpus Christi.

JOHN CAMPBELL

Guitarist, singer and songwriter John Campbell had the potential of turning a whole new generation of people onto the blues in the 1990s, much the same way Stevie Ray Vaughan did in the 1980s. His vocals were so powerful and his guitar playing so fiery, you couldn't help but stop what you were doing and pay attention to what you were hearing. But unfortunately, because of frail health and a rough European tour, he suffered a heart attack while sleeping on June 13, 1993, at the age of 41.October 11, 2008 is a tribute to his life and especially his music. The Ritz opened in 1929 as a movie theatre and vaudeville house and in 1974 it turned into The Ritz Music Hall. Music greats such as Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Bo Diddley, Freddie King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Metallica, Jimmy Buffet and more played there in the early days. Unfortunately, the venue closed down in 1989 and has slowly deteriorated. PATCH is restoring The Ritz to its original beauty and turning it back into a state-of-the-art entertainment venue worthy of the times and the name, The Ritz.
